FRESNO FLATS HISTORIC VILLAGE & PARK

This museum aims to recapture 19th century life in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The museum is built around two restored and furnished homes dating back to the late 1860s. They have been designated by the State of California as Points of Historical Interest for their unique construction styles that were once common throughout Northern California. Joining these two houses are a pair of one-room schools, two 19th century jails and several farm buildings. The name of the museum calls back to the time when Oakhurst was instead named Fresno Flats. They offer self-guided tours, events, and even guided tours of the buildings.

The museum is open year round from sunrise to sunset 7 days a week for picnicking and self-guided tours. There is a gift shop and tours that are open between Monday and Friday 10 AM to 4 PM during April to December. There is also a library that is open Thursdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

THE WORLD FAMOUS TALKING BEAR

The California Grizzly, one of the most iconic animals of the state of California and even on the state's flag, captures the imagination as a fierce but majestic creature. One of Oakhurst’s better known landmarks is the talking bear. This was originally constructed in 1923 out of fiberglass to lure in the International Olympic Site Selection Committee. While the city was not selected for the Olympics, the talking bear became an iconic part of Oakhurst and a popular attraction among visitors.

Perfect to visit on the way to other activities in Downtown Oakhurst. Take a picture  with this unique impressive looking statue while listening to a history lesson straight from its mouth.
